Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are terms used to describe a group of complex brain development disorders. They are characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication (verbal and nonverbal), and repetitive behaviors. Music therapy has been found to have a positive impact on individuals with autism, with research indicating a connection between musical processing strengths and the use of music as a therapeutic intervention. Singing, for instance, can help children access new neurological pathways to support early speech development. Music's structured nature provides a way for individuals with autism to organize auditory information, aiding in memorization of scripts, task sequences, and academic facts. Additionally, music can facilitate social and family connections by creating shared interests. It offers a creative medium for exploration, promoting flexibility and spontaneity. Autism is a developmental disability that typically manifests in the first three years of life, affecting communication and interaction abilities. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning it affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. Music therapy has demonstrated positive effects in the treatment of autism, particularly in areas such as social-emotional responsiveness and communication. Research shows that individuals with autism often display equal or superior abilities in pitch processing, emotion labeling in music, and musical preference compared to typically developing peers. This evidence highlights the clinical benefits of music therapy for individuals with autism.
